Timesheet questions, answered

What belongs on a timesheet, how to round hours, and what it does and does not prove.

What should a timesheet include?

Who did the work and who it was for, the period it covers, one row per day with the hours and what was done, and a total. Signature lines if your client counter-signs. A task description per day is what turns a timesheet from a number into a record.

How should I round hours?

To the nearest 15 minutes is the most common convention; some agree tenths of an hour, or no rounding at all. Any of them is defensible. What is not defensible is changing the rule halfway: agree it before the first invoice and state it on the document.

Weekly or monthly?

Weekly suits hourly work billed frequently; monthly suits a retainer. It matters less than when you fill it in. Entries made on the day hold up; a month reconstructed from memory at invoice time is where disputes start.

Does a timesheet prove I did the work?

As written, no: you filled it in, so it is your account of your own hours. It becomes evidence when the client who received the work confirms it. With a free account that confirmation is one tap for them, and the confirmed record is permanent and checkable by anyone.

Can I raise an invoice from these hours?

Not on this page: the two free tools are separate and neither stores anything. In a signed-in account, tracked hours lock into a period and the invoice is raised from it, so the hours you billed and the hours you recorded cannot drift apart.

Where does what I type go?

Nowhere. This page has no account and writes nothing to a database. The form lives in your browser and the PDF is built there. Close the tab and it is gone.

General information about what these documents usually contain, not legal or tax advice. Invoicing, tax and record-keeping rules differ by country: check with the tax authority where you are registered, or an accountant, before relying on any of it. The user guide covers how the tools fit with the rest of Can0nical.
